What Is Physician Compare?

Physician Compare is a public website that allows consumers to search for physicians and other healthcare professionals who provide Medicare services. At this time, the site provides information on providers' names, addresses, contact information, specialties, clinical training, gender, languages spoken, affiliated hospitals, and Medicare payment information. This information is available for both individual practitioners and group practices.

A full redesign of the website was launched in 2013 to implement improvements to the underlying database as well as an Intelligent Search feature; the changes addressed improving both the functionality and usability of the website for consumers. According to the 2014 final rule, CMS plans to continue reporting physician information, including performance within quality programs, in phases.

For Physicians Practicing in Groups:

A quality programs section has been added to each group practice profile page to indicate whether the providers are meeting the requirement of satisfactory reporting in the Group Practice Reporting Option (GPRO) or e-prescribing under the eRx Incentive Program.

The International Spine Intervention Society provides this information for educational purposes only and always recommends that providers consult the CMS Web site for additional information. It is each provider's responsibility to know and to understand the requirements and consequences of each reporting program in which he or she participates.
