The Spine Intervention Society was represented at the June 11-15, 2016 American Medical Association House of Delegates meeting by Drs. Claire Tibiletti and Kieran Slevin. Several policy issues addressed at this meeting related to SIS members' practice such as scope of practice, pain as the fifth vital sign, coverage for chronic pain, opioid-related issues and many more.

One of the most urgent policy issues discussed was the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Office of Nursing Services (ONS) new policy document, the "Advanced Practice Registered Nurses" or “VHA Nursing Handbook,” that would mandate “independent” practice for all Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). This rule would effectively abandon the VA’s proven model of physician-led, team-based anesthesia care.
