The July 1 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) from the CDC discusses prescribing rates of opioid pain relievers (OPR) across the US.  Data from 2012 show wide variation in prescribing rates; regional variation was seen as well as variation based on drug type, such as long-acting or extended-release. These differences cannot be attributed to differences in patient health status across national regions.  To avoid the adverse health outcomes that may result from overprescribing OPR, the CDC recommends state policy changes that encourage cautious prescribing according to clinical recommendations.
