Congressional Advisory Body Recommends Cuts to Specialist Payments

The Medicare Payment Advisory Committee (MedPAC), a commission which advises the Congress on Medicare payment policy, during its October 6th meeting, made recommendations to offset the elimination of the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula. MedPAC recommended that the payment for primary care services would remain at the same level for 10 years, while payments for all other services would be reduced by 5.9% for three years, followed by a freeze for the remaining seven years.

Such ill-fitted solution is unacceptable to ISIS and other medical societies, which will continue to work toward a more reasonable approach to avert a 29.5% reduction in Medicare rates on January 1, 2012.
