GAO Releases a Report on Unsafe Injection Practices

Posted By Administration, Thursday, August 16, 2012
The Government Accounting Office (GAO) released its report on unsafe injection practices, which was prepared at the request of Congressman Frank Pallone [(D) – NJ6] - Ranking Member, House of Representatives Subcommittee on Health of the Committee on Energy and Commerce.
The GAO was asked to examine (1) available information on the extent and cost of blood-borne pathogen outbreaks related to unsafe injection practices in ambulatory care settings, (2) the changes in federal oversight to prevent unsafe injection practices in ambulatory care settings since 2009, and (3) other federal efforts to improve injection safety practices in ambulatory care settings.  The GAO recommendations included collection of data on unsafe injection practices, monitoring of ASCs and strengthening of targeting efforts for healthcare settings – such as the "One and Only Campaign”.

As five outbreaks reviewed by the GAO report occurred in pain clinics, it is important that ISIS members review the CDC recommendations and materials.  Please the Patient Safety Section of the ISIS Website.
