Sustainable Growth Rate Legislative Update

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, December 18, 2013

On December 12, 2013, the House of Representatives approved a two-year, federal budget agreement that included a provision to extend Medicare's current physician Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) payment update of 0.5% through March 31, 2014 delaying a 23.7% cut slated for January 1, 2014. This "patch” to the SGR was joined by two similar bills that were passed by the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee to repeal the SGR formula. The Ways and Means Committee bill provides a 0.5 percent update in physician fees for three years followed by a freeze in fees for seven years; the bill passed by the Senate Finance Committee would freeze fees from 2014 – 2023.  Congress will have until March 31, 2014 to complete action on the SGR repeal bills or pass another short-term extension of the current payment rate.

ISIS members are encouraged to visit to contact their Congressional representatives and encourage them to pass a long-term SGR fix.
