Report Encourages Expansion of Nursing Scope-of-Practice

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, January 25, 2012
A joint report, from the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, has been published. One of the goals of the report was to analyze the capacity of the nursing workforce to meet the demands of a reformed health care system. The recommendations include removing institutional obstacles (ie. limits on nurses' scope of practice) as one of the goals, so that nurses can practice to the full extent of their training. The report also promotes the use of financial incentives and federal anti-competition laws to encourage the states to adopt best practices on nursing scope of practice laws.
